Over the past two weeks we have focused on studiolightning and how it can affect a shoot.
Written Assignment
Name three lighting sources and their functions.
LEDs, makes the subject well illuminated, can be battery driven and easy to bring with you and modify
Tungsten lights, has a warm feeling and can be just one lightbulb.
The sun, natural light outside, can not adjust the levels of brightness
Name two light modifiers and explain the difference between them.
A reflector, Its a reflective surface that helps diretional light towards the subject.
An Umbrella, It defuses the light from the source towards the subject
Draw a diagram of and describe the three-point lighting setup.
KEY – is the brightest light of all three, main source for light at the subject
FILL – Is meduim bright and servs as a filling light so the subject looses most, if not all shadows from the two other lights
BACK – is the softes light that servses as a divider for the subject and the backround. Makes a “halo” effect on the subject
Research Assignment
- Draw three studio setups for the following subject matters and list all the equipment that you would use to light your subjects:
- Portrait
- Fashion
- Beauty
In a magazine or on the Internet, find one fashion shot, a beauty shot and a portrait shot and explain how you think the lighting was set up in each shot.

Beauty – one light behind camera with a softbox and one on the right side as a key light with a reflector under the subject to light up under her chin

Fashion – One key light directed at the chest of the subject, and one fill light above the camera to ease out the hardness of the key light, with a softbox.

Portrait – Uses natural sunlight from windows behind the camera as a key light and a fill light on the left side of the camera, this creates a soft shadow to the right.
Practical Assignments
Take some portrait shots and pay specific attention to the lighting you use. Do one shot with soft lighting and one with more dramatic, harder lighting. It would be beneficial to hire studio lighting, but if you can’t, you may use natural light, reflectors and your camera’s flash.

Soft light
Here is used one key light to the right side with a umberella and one fill light to the left with a softbox

Hard light
Here is a hard keylight directly on the subject. This creates a more dramatic effect and changes the mood immediately in the picture
Practical Assignments
Choose a portrait photograph from the ones you took in Question 3. Create a unique movie poster for a fictional fantasy movie of your choice. Make use of different backgrounds and editing techniques you have learned.
